Humak´s fields of action comprise of socially important branches of science. We are a specialist and leading educator of humanities and pedagogy and cultural management. Humak UAS is an expert and a leading instructor in humanities, education and cultural management whose task is the development of NGO and youth work, entrepreneurship in cultural management and certain creative spheres of activity and sign language interpreting. In its international activities, Humak emphasises the innovation activities and the development of communities that comes from the citizens’ needs.
Humak UAS profiles as a developer who reaches its targets in partnership with workinglife organisations. The promotion of social and cultural innovations and active citizenship are amongst Humak’s focus areas.
In choosing the international partnerships within EU and globally the basic principle for Humaks participation into international cooperation project is that the content of the work has to compatible with our curricula and the aim of the cooperation has to include goals that will improve our educational aims. Mainly this limits the possible partners into the institutions which have very similar degree programme or part of the curricula to Humaks curricula. One of the key networks for connecting with suitable partner instituions are the international networks build for the profession and research included
into field of study like Encatc (European Network of Cultural Administration Training Centers) and AAAE (Association of Arts Administration Educators) for cultural management degree programme and EFSLI (European Forum of Sign Language Interpretation) for sign language interpretation degree programme.
Concerning the geographical are Humak is focusing on neighboring countries and EU countries. While the non-EU focus is with Russia and North-America. However the main principle is still the in the curricula and in the possibilities to find matching degree programmes or pars of the curricula.
The main focus in mobility is within the first cycle students and the international season within their degree. All the degree programmes have a similar season and the idea is to make sure the students have necessary skills to utilize the international mobility period and gain full recognition of their study abroad experiences.
Concerning the staff exchanges all the staff three different goals for their mobility period. First to fulfill the administrative goals e.g. teaching quota etc. Secondly connect with the local working life in order to find suitable training places for our students and thirdly to find out the current state of research of their own field in the host organization and local working life.
Humak UAS has currently two joint degree which have been developed by the LLA-programmes curriculum development project funding.: EU-MASLI for Sign Language Interpretation Masters degree and Masters Degree in Youth Work. Humak is planning to continue both of these programmes and also develop a new Master degree programme in English for the Cultural Management programme. Humak is also planning to develop a new B.A. programme in Englsih for the Youth Work Programme. For the new programmes Humak is actively searching for suitable joint degree parnters and funding.
Humak UAS is a network of campuses situated around Finland. The main regions are eastern Finland, central Finland, western Finland and the capital region. Within these regions Humak has international cooperation with local universities, UAS´s and the local working life organisations. Humak has a strong emphasis on all regions while the main partners in local international activities are University of Jyväskylä, Jyväskylä UAS and the higher educational institutions in capital region. Humak has a strong intent to develop the local partnerships with the working life in order to create more international activities in order to meet the needs of the local labour market.
For international partners Humak has been focusing creating partnerships with instituions which share the similar humanitic values and have a curricula or modules of curricula matching the Humak programmes curriculas. Human connections are the basis of Humak UAS’s core values which are: the humanistic concept of man,tolerance and respect for other people, open, human interaction and trust as well as, learning together.
The main activity for international activities if going to be the student and staff mobility but the main focus for international (EU and non-EU) cooperation projects is going to be the intensive programmes which gives a good starting point for students in order to have their first international mobility experience and for staff in order to have their first joint module development experince.
Also for the research development the staff mobility is going to have strong empahsis on mobility of researchers in order to create networks for project development in their realated fields of study and international working life.
Humak is an university of applied sciences and as such has an integrated pathway for persons who have not been following the traditional path to higher education. The working life experience is an obligatory element for all the students who intent to study in UAS but it can also compensate the lack of formal education. During the entry exam the evaluators can emphasize the work experience and enhance the students changes of being select.
Humak is going to Involve the national and international employers and labour market institutions in the design and delivery of the curricular reform. As university of applied science Humak has to keep close working relationship with working life and to make sure the students skills match with expectation of the working life. One of the main activities to match these needs is the students training period where the student and teachers get instant feedback from the working life organizations.
The intensive personal mentoring is going to prevent the students drop out rates and make sure the
teachers get updated information about the students skills development.
Humak is also focusing on increasing the use of ICT and distance learning in its delivery of the courses.
The staff mobility is going to have three different forus. While the main priority is to teach at the host institution, the lecturer is also required to create contacts to local working life in order to create training placements for students in their related field and also make contacts to the local R&D communities within the host institution.
Concerning its international programmes HUMAK is going to focus on attracting the best students, both from EU and from outside the EU. Humak has been building the learning mobility more systematically into curricula, for its degree programmes in Finnish the curricula starting from 2013 includes international season. The main core of the international season is the international mobility and the students do the mobility by student exchange or by international training period. The students may also gain the international skills by doing the training period at national organizations which have international cooperation.
Humak is going through a structural reform in order to create R&D&I centers located near the working life organizations. while the campuses are usually located in separated location the new structure creates a learning path where the first two years of studies are taken place at the campus and the last two years are going to take place in R&D&I-centers located in city centers where the working life organizations related to the study field are situated nearby. This kind of arrangement makes it easy for students to do the training period and also emphasize the cooperation between Humaks researchers and professional organisations.
Humak is looking forward to create more diversify for its funding sources. Humak is going to prioritize the efficiency of human resource management.
Roots in the Free Civic Education
The ownership structure of Humak has influenced the basic values of our university of applied sciences. Humak has its roots in folk high schools, which promote education and active citizenship. The shareholders of Suomen Humanistinen Ammattikorkeakoulu Oy, that operates Humak, represent those organizations. They have stated their commitment to develop Humak.
