What is accreditation of work?

Accreditation of work is an alternative way to study either at your workplace or through voluntary work. It refers to the recognition of competence gained through working alongside your studies as study credits.In accreditation of work, the student learns the knowledge and skills required in the workplace by building a knowledge base and applying it in practice. The goal is to achieve the learning outcomes of the course.

Accreditation of work is based on working alongside your studies. You can also accredit voluntary work completed during your studies. The key principle is that accreditation is always agreed upon before the work is carried out, and the lecturer decides at their discretion whether to grant permission for accreditation. Work cannot be accredited retrospectively.

Accreditation of work at Humak is available to students completing a bachelor’s or master’s degree, as well as Open UAS students.

Accreditation is possible on all Humak courses (including internship courses), except for the following:

Please note: If a working life assignment covering the entire group has been agreed for a course, or if the course includes key safety guidelines related to the degree, accreditation of work may not necessarily be possible.

Accreditation is carried out in advance according to a plan drawn up within the course schedule. It is based on working alongside studies, and more than one accreditation cannot be completed simultaneously. The scope is at least 50% of the course credits (1 cr = 26.6 h) and at most the full duration of the course.

How does accreditation differ from RPL and internship?

Accreditation mustalways be agreed upon in advance, unlike RPL, which is based on previously acquired competence. Accreditation differs from internship in that no supervision is required from the workplace — the student already masters their work, and guidance takes place on Humak’s part as part of the course completion.

Work accreditation process

  • Familiarise yourself with the learning outcomes of the course. Identify tasks in your work that you can propose for accreditation.
  • Read the accreditation instructions in the course implementation plan on the course learning platform (e.g. Humak Canvas) and contact the course lecturer. The accreditation plan is completed on each course’s learning platform.
  • The duration of work accreditation is the same as the duration of the course. The accreditation assignment must be completed within the course schedule. If the accreditation assignment is not submitted on time, the student must re-enrol on the implementation and agree on the accreditation again.
  • Complete the Accreditation of work experience implementation plan and submit it to the course learning platform. If the course is not running at the time you need to complete the plan, contact the lecturer responsible for the course.

  • Carry out the work accreditation according to the plan you have made and keep to the schedule.
  • Complete the agreed accreditation assignment. The work accreditation assignment is primarily the course assignment. It can also be another assignment agreed upon with the course lecturer during the planning phase.
  • Submit the work accreditation assignment to the course according to the instructions. Attach a self-assessment to the accreditation assignment. Assess your own performance in relation to the course objectives on a scale of 1–5.

The lecturer assesses your course completion and records the grade according to the course grading scale in Peppi.
