Adventure and Outdoor Educator Methods

What is worth studying next year? Nature and experience as educational tools in pedagogical work for teachers and education professionals.

Who Is It For

Teachers and education professionals

Courses designed to strengthen wellbeing, inclusion, and safe everyday practices – with nature as a learning environment and experience as a pedagogical tool.

How

Research-based and practical

Gain up-to-date skills in nature-based, experiential, and adventure pedagogy – directly applicable to your daily work.

Core Focus

Safe and responsible guidance

Psychological, social, and physical safety, along with the responsibilities of the instructor, form the foundation of outdoor and adventure educator methods.

The start of the year is a great moment to pause and focus on professional development. In recent years, nature, experience, and active learning have emerged as central themes in education, where learners’ wellbeing, inclusion, and safe everyday practices are priorities. Humak Open University of Applied Sciences’ spring 2026 course offerings meet this need with three courses that examine nature, functionality, and experiential learning from complementary perspectives. Courses are in taught in Finnish.

Courses can be taken individually to meet specific professional needs or combined into a broader competence package. The common thread is nature as a learning environment, experience as a pedagogical tool, and safe, responsible guidance as a core aspect of professional competence.

Why these studies?

Through these studies, you will gain practical methods and a clear framework for nature-based, experiential, and adventure pedagogy.

  • Strengthen group wellbeing and community through nature-based methods
  • Access low-threshold active methods without extensive outdoor experience
  • Learn to plan and guide safely in diverse learning environments
  • Combine theory and practice so that learning translates directly into everyday work

Deepen your competence in experiential and adventure pedagogy

The courses are independent modules, united by a common pedagogical approach: nature as an active learning environment, experience as a key learning tool, and safe guidance as the core of professional competence.

Courses can be completed alongside work and structured into a personal competence package – either through a single course or by combining multiple modules.

In many cases, professional development courses that enhance work-related skills are tax-deductible as a business expense (subject to individual circumstances).
