Introduction

Päivi Timonen, PhD – Pioneer in online pedagogy and expert in collaborative learning.

I defended my doctoral thesis in December 2025 at the Faculty of Education of the University of Lapland. I research collaborative online pedagogy. In my dissertation, I present the VOV model for collaborative online pedagogy, which provides a concrete tool for high-quality collaborative online teaching, learning, and work communities.

I am a passionate advocate of collaborative online teaching, and I want to offer everyone the opportunity to study online in a collaborative, flexible, and real-time manner. I believe that online learning can be as high-quality and effective as traditional education, as long as it is implemented actively, collaboratively, motivatingly, and participatively.

I have designed and implemented various online courses (self-paced, collaborative, cMOOCs) and am familiar with a wide range of online learning environments (Open LMS, Moodle, Howspace, Canvas, Thinglink, and other social media services).

In my work, I support Humak’s values: community, responsibility, equality, and humanity. I am interested in the responsible use of artificial intelligence in education, learning, and research, as well as its critical examination.

In my free time, I conduct research and enjoy being outdoors, picking berries and mushrooms, Iyengar yoga, cultural activities, and hiking in the wilderness of Lapland in the summer.
