Helsinki

A meeting place for education, organisations, and the Deaf community

Study to become a cultural manager, community educator, or interpreter on a campus where the Central Park offers opportunities for nearby nature adventures, and excellent transport connections take you to central Helsinki in just 30 minutes.

The Light House is home to a wide range of organisations and associations. For students of sign language, this creates a unique learning environment: several organisations working in the field of hearing and sign language operate in the same building. As a student, you encounter sign language in everyday use and have the opportunity to familiarise yourself with professional organisations and interpreter users already during your studies. Students from other fields also benefit from the building’s vibrant organisational community-

Most of Humak’s administration and student services are also located in the Light House. The office of the student union HUMAKO is located in the student space called Kotelo within the building.

Arrival

The Light House is located with good transport connections. The reception and main doors are open on weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

By car

There is plenty of parking available at the Light House. A parking permit can be collected from the reception during its opening hours.

By public transport

  • Commuter train: Huopalahti station
  • Bus 40, 41 and 56: Haaga vocational school (Haagan ammattikoulu)
  • Light rail line 15: Ilkantie

Accessibility information

Two designated accessible parking spaces are available for people with mobility impairments. The distance from the parking area to the building’s main entrance is approximately 50 meters. The pedestrian pathway is lightly illuminated, but access to the entrance door requires crossing a curb or walking on the roadway. The main entrance opens automatically with a motion sensor.

From the lobby, a walk-through elevator provides access to all floors of the C-wing. Corridors have a clear width of 1500 mm and surface materials are hard, level, and non-reflective. Lighting is even and non-glaring. Door openings have a minimum clear width of 850 mm.

All meeting, office, and teaching spaces feature acoustic surfaces.

Accessible toilets are located on the 1st floor in connection with the lobby (B-building) and on the 3rd and 4th floors. All accessible toilets are equipped with emergency call systems and support rails.

Two meeting rooms have induction loop provisions to support participation of people with hearing impairments in meetings.

Services

Our community educator and interpreter training programmes, a large part of Humak’s administration and services, and the office of the student union HUMAKO operate in the The Light House.
