Programme content

The Cultural Manager (Bachelor’s Degree), Art and Cultural Management programme comprises the University of Applied Sciences’ common studies, professional core studies and specialisation studies. The scope of the degree is 240 credits, and it is usually completed in 3.5–4 years. The programme duration can be shortened through recognition of prior learning (RPL) and/or summer studies.

Common studies will provide you with the readiness for studying, operating in working life and proactive development. Ethics, internationality and cultural diversity will create the foundation for community work and developing a professional background.

In cultural management studies, your learning path goes from learner to master and further to developer.

The programme enables you to delve into the important skills required in the field, such as project management, innovation and communication, in a diverse and practical way. You will also learn about entrepreneurship, productisation and the principles of financing in the creative sector.

There are two specialisation options: Management of Creative Content and Service Management and Mediation. With elective studies, you can flexibly orient your skills in the direction you want. You can also obtain credits for your own projects, cultural work or volunteering outside of your studies.

Part of Kuopio’s online degree studies are tied to the development of the communal neighbourhood of Savilahti. In this way, you can become part of a developing community already during your studies and gain experience in the development of multidisciplinary urban culture and events.

During your studies, you will have the opportunity to perform five traineeships in different organisations and companies in the cultural sector. You will find the traineeship positions yourself, according to your own interests. Traineeships will deepen your practical skills and play an important role in your development from student to professional. By means of traineeships, you will create networks in working life already during your studies and gain valuable contacts with actors in the sector. The networks and work experience gained through traineeships often play an important role in employment.

In addition to internships, projects and cooperation with working life are an important means of networking and learning in your studies. They also offer you a genuine working life environment in which to learn while also delving into the concrete development of the sector. Right from the beginning of your studies, you will carry out working life projects directly with organisations in the sector during, for example, marketing, service design, strategic planning and digital production courses. The studies also include visiting and getting to know actors in the cultural sector, lectures by experts in the field as part of the teaching and real assignments from industry organisations related to the course assignments. The cultural management lecturers are widely networked and active in the field, allowing you to become familiar with current themes and examples in the sector during the programme.

At Humak, the RPL, i.e. Recognition of Prior Learning process, means in practice that a student can make use of their prior expertise to advance their studies. This expertise can come from work experience, prior studies or, for example, hobbies and volunteer work, if they are related to the goals of the studies. Approved skills are entered into the study register, which can compensate for a course partially or entirely. Your personal coach is responsible for the RPL procedure.

We also offer you the opportunity to complete courses as summer studies

You want to combine work and studies

Online studies enable a flexible way of studying, as most of the studies are done independently. Flexibility helps you to adjust your studies with your life situation.

Blended studies are for you if you want to combine the community of campuses with the flexibility of networks. You will be supported by coaching, encouraging support from a student group as well as a clear, jointly progressing study path. Online studies will add flexibility to your studies.

Studies at an institute of higher education are a new beginning for you

Blended studies are an excellent choice for you especially if you are applying for your first academic degree or it has been some time since your previous studies. You value community learning and encounters both on campus and online.

You want a clear routine for your studies

In blended studies, you get a clear study routine, thanks to alternating studies between the campus and online. As the studies progress, teaching online and on campus decreases, and the proportion of independent work increases.
