Internship in working life
Your bachelor’s degree includes at least 30 credits of internship.
Your internship step by step
Your bachelor’s degree includes at least 30 credits of internship — it is a significant part of your studies and a valuable opportunity to grow professionally. During your internship, you won’t just work in a real work environment; you’ll also research and develop work practices and build your own, personal professional skills through concrete goals.
Read the instructions below carefully. Find out what you need to consider before your internship, during your internship, and towards the end of your internship.
Before your internship
- First, think about what kind of internship place interests you and will develop your competence. Note that you also have the option of international internship opportunities or completing your internship in a Humak project.
- Job and internship vacancy announcements from Humak’s working life partners, as well as other student projects, can be found in Tuudo. Click the “Työ ja harjoittelu” (Work and internship) link in the Tuudo menu and select Humak’s job announcements. You can also browse internship vacancies at career.humak.fi in addition to the app, but you will need your Humak user credentials to log in to the web service.
- You can find out more about internships from other students. Be active and participate in teaching sessions and events where you can hear about other students’ internship experiences.
- If needed, prepare the appropriate documents for applying for an internship place (CV, cover letter).
- If you have difficulty finding a suitable internship place, discuss the matter with your lecturer. Please raise openly any individual needs or obstacles related to your internship (such as a criminal record entry).
- A university of applied sciences has the right to request a student to provide a criminal record extract when the studies include tasks that essentially involve working with young people and children (Criminal Records Act (770/1993), Section 6, Subsection 3).
- Students are informed of the obligation to present a criminal record extract at the very start of their studies, and they are responsible for ensuring they present it within the given deadline.
- The student must present the criminal record extract to the PSP coach responsible for their group or the lecturer responsible for the course before the internship agreement is drawn up. A student cannot begin their internship period before presenting a valid criminal record extract.
- A criminal record extract is valid for 6 months at a time, so the student must ensure that their extract is current. This may require obtaining and presenting a new extract for each internship. If the internship is completed in smaller periods throughout the academic year (or longer), the criminal record extract must be presented every 6 months.
- The need to present a criminal record extract is assessed in relation to the specific internship place and work tasks.
- The student orders the criminal record extract from the Legal Register Centre and presents it to the lecturer responsible for the internship. You can order the extract here.
- If the student does not present the criminal record extract, they cannot begin their internship. The student’s right to study may be suspended until they present the criminal record extract to the lecturer responsible for the internship.
- If the criminal record extract contains an entry of a criminal conviction, the student must immediately raise the matter with the lecturer responsible for the internship and, if necessary, discuss it directly with the Head of Education. An entry of a criminal conviction in the criminal record extract does not automatically mean the right to study is revoked — each case is always considered individually. Factors that may affect the consideration include, for example, the field of study, the offence committed, the time of the offence, and the length of the sentence.
If your internship takes place in a wellbeing services county, check the communicable disease and vaccination guidelines of that county before your internship begins. If needed, ask for help from your supervisor at the internship place.
- Register for the internship course in Peppi.
- Familiarise yourself with the detailed course completion instructions in Hoodle, then complete the written Practical training plan and agreement (hForms) which can be also found on the Practical Training Hoodle platform.
- The internship agreement is signed by the student, the lecturer, and the internship supervisor in AtomiSign. All parties must approve the internship agreement before the internship begins. An approved internship agreement is a prerequisite for the student’s insurance coverage during the internship. Find out more about Humak students’ insurance during internships on Humak Teams Channel.
- Depending on the nature of the work, your internship place may also require a confidentiality agreement in addition to the internship agreement. Drawing up the confidentiality agreement is the responsibility of your internship place.
The preparation of internship plans and contracts is done on a separate form Practical training plan and agreement (hForms) which can be also found on the Practical Training Canvas course platform.
- Fill in the form and submit it to your lecturer for approval. Once the form has been approved, save it as a PDF for yourself. Note: The PDF version becomes available only after you have received an email confirmation that your lecturer has approved the form.
- You can see that the lecturer has approved the form when the approval button is dark grey.
- You can find the PDF version in the bottom left corner of the page. Save the PDF by clicking the PDF icon.
- Upload the form to AtomiSign (atomisign.fi) for signing. Add the signing parties (student, lecturer and internship supervisor) as signatories.
- Once all parties have signed the agreement, upload it to the designated submission point in the Canvas course platform.
- Note: The form cannot be edited after it has been sent. If the agreement needs to be changed — for example, if it has not been signed within the deadline, if the internship dates change, or if the student has not added themselves as a signatory — a new agreement must always be drawn up and a new signing request activated.
At Humak, you can complete your degree internship abroad. You will find more information on internship opportunities, the application process, and practical arrangements on this page.
During your internship
Familiarise yourself with the internship course assignments in the Canvas learning management system. Working on the assignments and reflecting on what you have learnt is a good way to start from the very beginning of your internship.
During their first internship, the student either arranges a guidance meeting with their workplace supervisor and lecturer, or confirms the progress of the internship towards its goals in another suitable way. The meeting can be held, for example, as an online session or as an email exchange between all parties.
- During the internship, the student is introduced to the field’s working life under supervision, meaning they have the right to request guidance and orientation from their internship supervisor.
- During your internship, you may encounter situations where you feel uncertain. Discuss the matter openly with your internship supervisor and do not hesitate to contact your lecturer if needed.
If your internship is interrupted:
- The internship agreement normally ends when the internship concludes. The internship agreement can be terminated during the contract period on the grounds set out in Chapter 8, Section 1 of the Employment Contracts Act, or if the achievement of the goals set for the internship has been significantly compromised. Terminating the internship agreement must always be reported in writing to Humak’s representative (primarily the lecturer responsible for internship coaching).
- If the internship is interrupted for a justified reason, such as the student’s serious illness or interruptions caused by the internship organisation, continuing the internship requires written notification to Humak’s representative and agreement between all contracting parties.
- Disagreements concerning the internship agreement are primarily resolved through negotiation between the parties to the agreement.
The internship is part of your studies, and students are entitled to student financial aid during the internship period. Student financial aid can also be applied for the summer period if the student wishes to use their entitlement for this. If the internship place pays a salary for the internship period, the student should check matters related to student financial aid with Kela. Enquire about other internship-related benefits with your internship place, such as meals, accommodation, etc.
Towards the end of your internship
- Finalise and submit your internship assignments in accordance with the Canvas learning management system instructions.
- Register for the working life or internship seminar. Instructions can be found on the Canvas platform.
- The student is responsible for providing the internship supervisor with the feedback form.
- The internship supervisor assesses the student’s performance during the internship, including working life skills and competence related to the content of the work. The lecturer assesses the internship course on a scale of Pass–Fail. The lecturer enters the completion entry in the Peppi student register.
- Request an internship certificate from your internship place.
- Make use of the experience and feedback you have received when updating your job application documents (e.g. CV, LinkedIn, portfolio).
