Humak has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Summit Academy, aiming for cooperation. The two organizations have also signed a contract for delivery of the first common training for international mountain and river guides taking place in Nepal in autumn 2022.

Summit Academy is an experienced private education provider, offering trainings in mountain and river guiding in Nepal. The trainings are expedition based, meaning that the participants study theories that are put into practice during the expeditions carried out in the Himalayas in Nepal.

Humak is the leading higher education provider in adventure and outdoor education in Europe, offering its own bachelor’s degree in adventure and outdoor education. Degree programme students study the theories of outdoor education and get to practise them actively through expeditions and outdoor activities that are part of their studies.

Summit Academy and Humak have been able to identify that they both follow high safety and quality standards. In addition, they practise similar ways of combining theoretical and practical learning methods. This makes them a good match for offering trainings in cooperation.

International Mountain and River Guide Education

Summit Academy arranges the International Mountain and River Guide Education training in Nepal in autumn 2022. As part of the training, Humak will deliver a course in outdoor leadership (5ECTS). This means that the participants completing the course will, besides the training certificate, be awarded with a Transcript of Records showing that they have conducted 5ECTS at Humak University of Applied Sciences. This certificate may come in handy for participants who aspire to start university studies in outdoor education later on.

The International Mountain and River Guide Education will equip the participants with theories and practical experience of working outdoors. It is carried out in the Himalayan mountains and on its rivers. The focus will be on high altitude trek leading and mountaineering, as well as raft guiding and white-water kayaking.

“It is with great enthusiasm that we are looking forward to offering this training in cooperation with Humak,” says Xenia Brundin from Summit Academy. Tero Lämsä, Team Leader for the adventure education team at Humak, completely agrees with Xenia. He adds that he is also looking forward to further developing the education cooperation with Summit Academy. They also want to take the chance to encourage anyone with a passion for and experience of outdoor activities to sign up for the training.
