Humak follows the BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) model, which means that students use their own laptops for learning and teaching purposes. Students are responsible for acquiring their own device and for its use, security, updates, and ensuring that all software licenses are legally valid.

Your own device is an essential tool for flexible studying, regardless of time and location. Teaching is not tied to any specific device recommendation, and a standard laptop is sufficient for your studies. Loan devices are intended only for temporary use and are available in limited numbers, for example at the Kuopio campus for interpreter programme. IT services support students with user accounts and system-related issues, but students are responsible for the basic use and maintenance of their own devices.

Laptops running Windows or macOS are the most recommended options, as they provide the best compatibility with Humak’s digital services. Chromebook devices can be used to access services through a web browser, but some features may be limited and the user experience may not be as smooth as on Windows or Mac computers.

Keep your device’s operating system and software up to date and make sure you can use Humak’s services securely from your own computer. Ensure that your device has a working camera, microphone, and headphones for remote teaching and online meetings.

Eduroam is an international wireless roaming service for higher education institutions. It allows Humak students and staff to access the internet securely not only at Humak but also at other eduroam-participating organisations in Finland and around the world.

When you are on campus, set up Eduroam by installing the configuration package from cat.eduroam.org, selecting Humak as your organisation, and signing in with your Humak account in the format username@humak.fi and your password.

Once Eduroam has been installed, your device will automatically connect to the network wherever Eduroam is available.

If Eduroam does not work, first check that you are using the correct username format and that your password is up to date. Changing your password also affects Eduroam, so the issue may be resolved by reinstalling the Eduroam profile or signing in again with your updated credentials.

Read the instructions for setting up secure printing (add instructions to the media library). Secure printing means that a print job is released only after you authenticate at a campus printer.

Send the file to print as usual from your own device, go to a campus printer, and authenticate (for example, using your user account or access card). Select your print job from the print queue and release the printout.

If your print job is not visible, check the print queue or resend the job. If needed, contact IT support.
