Big Changes in Student Communication Channels as of 1.8!

Humak’s student communication channels have been completely revamped during spring and summer, resulting in a variety of changes. The revamp of student communication channels was done to modernize and improve communications and announcements targeted at students and to make information related to their studies easier to find. The amount of channels used has thus decreased and the accessibility of mobile services has improved.

The redesign comes after a service form project carried out in close cooperation with students. It was done to find out student experiences on the old channels and opinions on functioning student communication.

The Main Channels for Student Communication

  • Microsoft Teams: General announcements and ones relating to specific degree programmes and groups. All of Humak’s staff and students are in team Humak (d). All general announcements and updates are posted here.
  • Hoodle: Hoodle is for studying and Hoodle is where teachers post announcements and updates relating to your studies. Note that in mobile service Tuudo, you can see every update without having to log in to Hoodle separately.
  • Student’s Guide: Student’s data bank including forms and instructions for everything study related. This service replaced wiki in April 2020.
  • Student’s Desktop: Here you can find links to many student services and plan and follow your progress in your studies.
  • Tuudo: A mobile service in which you can find your electronic student ID, work and internship places offered for the students of Humak, your schedule and any updates to your study modules without having to log in to Hoodle. Your schedule you can also find on lukkarikone.

Make sure to also follow Humak’s social media and website to stay up to date on everything that’s happening at Humak.

The Channel for Everyday Communication is Microsoft Teams

All students have been added to Microsoft Teams teams and channels relating to their studies during the summer. The channel Humak is a general place for announcements relating to everyone and the student union HUMAKO informs people on their own channel. HUMAKO’s channel only includes students while other channels can have members of staff as well.

Announcements and information relating to your own studies you can find on the team of your own degree programme and on the channels created for each specific group. The teams of each degree programme can have staff as well as students.

Microsoft Teams is widely used in different organisations so it’s useful to get familiar with it during your studies. The service also works on mobile and there is an app, Ms Teams, available to download for free.

The general desktop in Peppi is no longer in use. The new entry page for students on Peppi is the Student’s Desktop which has links for all the useful services relating to your studies and you can also follow the progression of your studies there.

Channels for Each Degree Programme:

Next we will introduce the degree programme channels with examples. Adjust these instructions based on your form of study, your location and/or your group.

Please note that on your first time on Teams, you will see all the channels relating to your degree programme. So you will see group channels and location specific channels which are not relevant to you. On your first time you can “clean” your Teams view and hide these channels by clicking on the three dots placed on the channel. From there you choose “Hide channel” (an eye icon). If in the future you’ll need one of the hidden channels again, just click the hidden channels link on your team and make the channel visible again.

Community Educator

If you are studying to become a community educator in Jyväskylä in day-time contact teaching and you started your studies in the autumn of 2020, you need to follow the following teams and channels:

  • YP AMK team with a General-channel. In this team you will get announcements meant for all YP-students.
  • YP päivä JYV team, in which you will follow the channels General and your group channel amkYP_s20_JYV. From the eye icon, hide the channels you aren’t following. This is done to ensure that you will only get messages that are relevant to your studies. In some cases you might want to follow a few channels, if for example you progress in your studies quicker than the average pace.
  • If you study in the MOVE degree programme, you adjust accordingly (in addition to YP AMK team, you follow YP MOVE team and there your own group’s channel).
  • If you are studying a YAMK degree, it’s enough for you to follow YP YAMK team’s General channel.

Cultural Management

If you study to become a cultural manager for example in day-time contact teaching in Kauniainen and you started studying in the autumn of 2020, you need to follow the following teams and channels:

  • Kulttuurituotanto (opiskelijat) team, which has a General channel. In this team you will get announcements meant for all cultural management students.
  • Under the team you will find different groups’ channels of which you will follow your own group’s channel amkKP_s20_PKS. From the eye icon, hide the channels you will not follow. This is done to ensure you will only get messages that are relevant to your studies. In some cases you might want to follow a few channels, if for example you progress in your studies quicker than the average pace.
  • Cultural management YAMK students follow their own HuMaster – Kutu-opiskelijat team and its General channel.

Interpreting

If you are studying to become an interpreter in day-time contact teaching in Helsinki and you started studying in the autumn of 2020, you need to follow the following teams and channels:

  • Tulkki AMK -tiimi, which has a General channel. In this team you will get announcements meant for all interpretation students.
  • Under the team you will find different groups’ channels of which you will follow your own group’s channel amkTp_s20_PKS. From the eye icon, hide the channels you will not follow. This is done to ensure you will only get messages that are relevant to your studies. In some cases you might want to follow a few channels, if for example you progress in your studies quicker than the average pace.
  • YAMK students of interpretation have their own channel for communication which they have been informed separately.

Students can still create their own channels for project and team work on Teams. This has not been changed.

Student’s Guide

Student’s Guide replaced wiki in April and it is a data bank for all information needed for your studies. It is open for everyone without having to log in. The applicants accepted to study at Humak will also get all the information necessary for starting their studies here.

Hoodle

Hoodle is Humak’s learning environment. From here you can find all the study modules you have enrolled in. The information and announcements relating to specific study modules is also done there unless otherwise notified. The information posted on Hoodle you can also read on Tuudo so downloading it on your phone is recommended.

Student’s Desktop (Peppi)

Student’s Desktop is the new entry page of Peppi. It is a convenient tool with links to all the necessary student services you need for enrolling, planning and following your studies.

Tuudo

Tuudo works as an electronic student ID but you can also receive news from Hoodle, information on the work and internship opportunities offered for Humak’s students and your schedules on it. You can also find the menus of each campus on it.
