Outdoor Adventure Education through Physical Education

The project ‘Outdoor Adventure Education through Physical Education’ attempts to connect Outdoor-Adventure Education (OAE) and Teacher Education (TED) with a special focus on the promotion of Youth Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) within Physical Education (PE).

The project addresses the existing need for validating coherent material and educational policies, at a European level, which will help teachers seize the opportunities for high quality education mindful of tackling teaching challenges head-on. The project will include a set of tools for the OAE curriculum design and implementation, a pilot process of certification and internet technology (IT) based Open Educational Resources.

Objectives

The aim and objectives:
– To establish guidelines that will enhance the skills, knowledge, and understanding of teachers and teacher educators to design evidence-based OAE PE programs with an emphasis on SEL.
– To provide a Model Curriculum Template with a supporting planning guide on the implementation of OAE for SEL within PE, which could lead to a certification of teacher competence to use this as an innovative pedagogical means of instruction across the continuum (initial, induction, continuous professional development).
– To open up a discussion on how TED should incorporate OAE aiming at the development of a transnational culture of solidarity and responsibility through the curriculum.
– To respond to the growing demand of teachers for official certification of their knowledge and skills by proposing a draft certification process of OAE/SEL teaching.
– To provide an open educational web resource consisting of practical resources and guidelines accessible for teachers and structures, such as Universities, Colleges of Education, Ministries, in order to give them the opportunity to integrate and adjust the model OAE/SEL curriculum template across European educational organizations and beyond.
– To develop a set of quality indicators for the implementation of OAE/SEL education.

The project is the first practical and systematic response to the attempt to consolidate teacher-educator engagement in competence development. The project brings together a network of world leading expertise in OAE knowledge and implementation committed to create applied curriculum solutions that can benefit EU teachers’ development and ultimately foster students emotional and social skills and wellbeing. The project provides an opportunity to address the need for the development of related educational material for the areas OAE and SEL and to validate them directly at the European level rather than only within specific local contexts.
