Springboard to the event industry

The Springboard to the event industry -project aimed to address both the industry’s need for new workforce and to support young people exploring their own paths in finding a career in the event industry or more broadly in cultural and artistic fields.

The project included a coaching program lasting approximately six months, specifically designed for young people aged 18–29 from the region of Southwest Finland. The coaching aimed to facilitate job opportunities in the event industry or clearer pathways to further studies for the participants.

The coaching program included:

– Introduction to the cultural and event industry in general
– Insightful presentations by professionals in the event industry and introductions to various roles
– Familiarization with event technology (sound, lighting, and pyrotechnics)
– Opportunity to obtain a hygiene proficiency certificate, an alcohol serving permit and a security guard card
– Internship in a self-chosen event or cultural organization
– Guided organization of the group’s own event
– Support for employment in the form of career coaching

The project was co-financed by the European Social Fund and implemented through multidisciplinary collaboration with the Humak University of Applied Sciences, the youth services of the City of Turku, Turku Rock Academy, the event center Logomo, and the event production company Band Age Oy.

Objectives

The goal of the project was to promote the employment of young people in the event industry while simultaneously alleviating the labor shortage in the field. The objective was for the young individuals involved in the project to either find employment during or after the project in the event industry or enroll in relevant training. The aim was to instigate a positive change in the youth by strengthening their agency and belief in their abilities. After completing the coaching, the participants’ job-seeking and career planning skills were enhanced, and they gained practical experience and expertise to handle tasks in the event industry. The benefits generated by the project in the event industry are evident in the longer-term perspective, such as increased workforce resources.

Additionally, the goal was to create an operational model that could be utilized through collaboration between educational institutions, the private sector, the public sector, and the third sector in various measures related to the employment of young people. The operational model description can be found at: https://www.thinglink.com/scene/1790788070241468902.

The achievement of project goals was measured through interviews and surveys with the target group of young people, which assessed the initial situation, changes brought about by the coaching, and, finally, changes in the employment, study, or career plans of the young individuals. The realization of goals was also measured using ESF personal data forms.

The project achieved significant results, particularly in reducing the number of unemployed or those outside the labor market. In addition to quantitative goals, qualitative results were also achieved: the young participants networked with both event industry professionals and each other. Many young people strengthened their agency and participation through the coaching.
