The international conference for adventure education and experiential learning – EOE2023 – takes takes place at Nuorisokeskus Metsäkartano in Rautavaara, organized in collaboration with Humak, Tampere University, and the Finnish Youth Centers Association. Participants include adventure education professionals and researchers from various European countries and beyond, including the USA, Canada, and Australia.
The conference, happening from October 3 to 7, 2023, gathers around a hundred experts in the picturesque setting of Nuorisokeskus Metsäkartano, providing an ideal backdrop for both outdoor experiences and the EOE2023 sessions.
Located about one and a half hours drive from Kuopio, Nuorisokeskus Metsäkartano is surrounded by nature, offering great conditions for outdoor activities, adventures, and, of course, the conference sessions, workshops, and socializing. Humak’s Adventure Education team and second-year Adventure Education students are actively participating in the event.
The European Institute for Outdoor Adventure Education and Experiential Learning (EOE) was founded in 1996 in Spital, Austria, with the aim of bringing together practitioners, educators, and researchers from different European countries. It is an independent association registered in Germany. The EOE conference is held annually in one of the European countries.
Humak’s involvement in EOE is part of the adventure education curriculum. This year, being in Finland, Humak plays a role as a co-organizer, with students contributing to the practical aspects of the conference as part of their studies. The opening lecture by Humak lecturer Eeva Mäkelä will discuss the competencies of adventure educators, addressing resilience and how field experiences intertwine with theoretical knowledge. Other Humak lecturers and a diverse representation of industry experts will also be featured in the program.
For students, EOE2023 provides a practical way to complete the Coaching work course. The second-year Adventure and Outdoor Education students from Humak are actively involved in organizing the conference in collaboration with Metsäkartano. They are responsible for practical arrangements, including canoe workshops and evening programs for participants.
Tero Lämsä, Humak’s Adventure Education team leader, highlights the significance of students being part of the conference not just as attendees but also as contributors to its organization. -“The students gain valuable experience and insights by actively participating in the event”.
